Manufacturing fiberglass-reinforced plastics (FRP), water storage tanks, boat hulls, and artificial marble in Kenya requires unsaturated polyester resin initiators like MEKP and cobalt accelerators. Managing gel times, peak exotherms, and ambient tropical temperatures is critical to bubble-free curing. KIKI'S supplies certified organic peroxide catalysts across East Africa.
For polyester resin curing catalyst applications, KIKI'S Industrial Chemicals supplies documented industrial-grade raw materials and specialty formulation chemicals. We provide consistent chemical inputs and technical documentation to commercial operators across Kenya and the East African market.
Polyester resin curing catalysts comprise organic peroxides and organometallic promoters that initiate ambient free-radical crosslinking in unsaturated polyester resins to produce rigid composite products.
Key Facts
Primary Use Cases
Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) manufacturing represents a major composite industry in Kenya, producing commercial water storage tanks, sanitary ware, automotive body kits, boat hulls, and architectural panels. The core polymer binder is unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) dissolved in reactive styrene monomer.
Liquid polyester resin does not cure by drying or solvent evaporation; it transforms from a liquid into a rigid, highly crosslinked three-dimensional thermoset polymer network via free-radical addition polymerization. The catalyst—strictly an organic peroxide initiator, principally Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide (MEKP)—is decomposed by transition metal accelerators (Cobalt Octoate) dissolved in the resin.
When Cobalt Octoate donates an electron to the peroxide molecule, it splits the oxygen-oxygen bond, generating highly reactive free radicals at ambient temperatures without requiring heated ovens. In Kenya's warm climate, managing the balance between MEKP concentration (typically 1.0% to 2.0%) and cobalt promoter is critical. Under-dosing leads to an under-cured, tacky surface with poor chemical resistance; over-dosing triggers a violent exotherm (>140°C), causing thermal cracking, styrene boiling blisters, and scorched laminates.

Methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (MEKP), cobalt octoate accelerators, and vinyl ester promoters for composite fabrication.
Resin & Promoter Verification
Confirming unsaturated polyester resin temperature (20–25°C) and checking pre-promoted cobalt accelerator levels.
Precision MEKP Catalyst Metering
Accurately measuring 1.0% to 2.0% MEKP by weight using calibrated dispensers (never estimating by eye).
Homogeneous Gentle Blending
Stirring peroxide thoroughly into resin for 60 seconds without whipping air bubbles into the mix.
Fiberglass Wet-Out & Consolidation
Applying catalyzed resin to chopped strand mat or woven roving, consolidating with grooved laminating rollers.
Exotherm & Barcol Hardness Curing
Monitoring gelation (15–25 mins) and peak exotherm, allowing full Barcol 40+ hardness development before demolding.

COMMERCIAL & TECHNICAL GUIDANCE
Technical and process guidance for polyester resin curing catalyst in Kenya and East Africa.
MEKP is an organic peroxide oxidizer and cobalt octoate is a transition metal reducer. Mixing them directly without resin causes a violent, spontaneous chemical explosion and intense fire. Always blend cobalt into the resin first, then add MEKP.
