Ethyl Acetate 99.8% Min Pure (Fast-Evaporating Ester Solvent)
High-purity Ethyl Acetate 99.8% min (CAS 141-78-6, UN 1173) supplied in 200kg steel drums and IBCs by KIKI'S Industrial…
CAS 141-78-6 · Industrial Pure Grade · Liquid
Active ester solvent systems delivering rapid ink viscosity reduction, doctor blade cell release, and flash-drying on flexible packaging film converting lines.
Ethyl Acetate 99.8% Min is the primary active solvent in rotogravure and flexographic packaging inks, dissolving nitrocellulose resins and evaporating at 4.1 times the speed of butyl acetate to achieve tack-free dry films at line speeds exceeding 200 m/min.
Ink solvation is the dissolution and viscosity dilution of resin binders and pigments in volatile organic solvents to optimize printing press runnability.
Key Facts
Primary Use Cases
In rotogravure packaging printing, solvent management controls color density, dot fidelity, and web runnability:
Concentrated printing inks are diluted on-press using a calibrated reducer blend: Ethyl Acetate (50% to 60%), Denatured Ethanol or IPA (30% to 40%), and Retarder / Methoxypropanol (5% to 10%). Reducer is added until the ink running viscosity reaches 14 to 17 seconds in a Zahn #2 or Ford #4 cup at 25°C.
As the gravure cylinder rotates through the ink fountain, ethyl acetate's low surface tension ensures complete wetting into engraved microscopic cells. The doctor blade cleanly shears excess ink from the cylinder surface without trailing, and ink transfers cleanly onto corona-treated film under impression roller nip pressure.
Printed film travels through impingement drying tunnels at 60°C to 75°C. With an evaporation rate of 4.1 (vs butyl acetate = 1.0), ethyl acetate flashes off in milliseconds. Gas chromatography checks verify that residual retained solvent is well below international food packaging limits (< 10 mg/m² total retained solvent).
KIKI'S Industrial Chemicals supplies virgin Ethyl Acetate 99.8% Min in 180 kg steel drums with verified low moisture (<500 ppm), ensuring zero polyurethane cross-linking interference in lamination inks.
Press Ink Viscosity Reduction
Blend base ink with Ethyl Acetate/Alcohol reducer to achieve running viscosity of 14-16 seconds (Ford #4).
High-Speed Film Printing Transfer
Circulate ink through gravure fountain; transfer ink onto corona-treated film at line speeds up to 250 m/min.
Impingement Dryer Flash-Off
Flash off solvent in hot air tunnel (65°C) to achieve tack-free dry ink film before rewind rolls.
Residual Solvent GC Testing
Verify that retained solvent on finished packaging films remains strictly below 10 mg/m².
